1st Annual Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament

Recap by John Gordon

Special thanks must go out to everyone who contributed to the marvellous success of the first annual Eamonn J Gordon Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament held at Geneva Farms Golf Course in Northern Harford County on Friday 5th October 2007.  The event was blessed with a beautiful day and plentiful smiles.  Over 100 golfers took part in the shotgun start and with considerable monies being invested in the purchase of “strings” and “mulligan’s” 3 teams produced scores of 21 under par.

After the golf was finished and prizes distributed there was a silent auction of some sporting memorabilia, mementos from Eamonn’s office and gifts brought over from Ireland.  This was followed by a live auction conducted by Eamonn’s brother John.  Some items of Belfast crystal went under the hammer and Joe Snee was persuaded to spend 15 minutes of his hourly rate fee for the purchase of 2 beautiful Irish coffee glasses.  Not surprisingly Mike Euler went home with the 6 Irish whiskey glasses with the intention to use each and every one of them that evening (himself).  Doug Philips went home with Eamonn’s beer mug from Bull on the Beach (as if he needs an excuse to drink beer).  The day raised $15,000 for Eamonn’s Scholarship Fund and convinced the Irish that this event needed to be replicated in Belfast or Dublin, so if anyone is interested in coming to Ireland, please express your interest via the website.

Special thanks must go to the organisers and in particular Brent Kluge, Len Baroch, Michael Leaf and Gail Williams who unfortunately was unable to make the day due to illness.  Andy Winternitz, Sharon Pupa, Jennifer Kehoe and a whole host of other volunteers ensured the day ran smoothly and relieved the sponsors, the bidders and the players of their well earned dollars.  On behalf of myself, my sister Margaret, her husband Francis, Father Tom and Eamonn’s good friend David Macaulay we would wish to thank all of you who gave so generously of your time and money to this event and also for the kind hospitality that we received for what was a poignant but exhilarating return to Bel Air.

Finally it was wonderful to see Mairead and Eamonn Rory attend the function in memory of their father and it is clear that the respect and friendship that Eamonn imparted to all who knew him lives on in his children.
